MELT FLOW ANALYSIS

Understanding melt flow characteristics of plastics provides useful guidance for determining extruder parameters, compounding ratios, and determining best use cases for recycled materials.

Melt flow analysis provides a measurement of the rate of flow of plastic melt through a standardized pore, and for a nominal temperature and load. The melt flow rate (MFR) provides useful guidance for determining extruder parameters, compounding ratios, and determining use cases for recycled materials.

MOISTURE ANALYSIS

Understanding moisture levels in plastic materials is important to avoid processing variability and material degradation, and for providing quality control and assurance information for both internal and external use.

Moisture Analysis is conducted by heating a sample specimen to a nominal temperature and measuring the change in the weight of the sample to represent the loss of moisture by evaporation.

FLEXURAL ANALYSIS

A method to evaluate the flexural stiffness and strength of a molded sample when subject to an applied load at a defined span length. The properties calculated from this method include the modulus and strength values (yield, ultimate and fracture) and are commonly used by developers, designers and DIYers in the product design process.

IMPACT ANALYSIS

A method to evaluate the toughness and failure mechanisms of a polymer when subject to an applied impact. Conducted as either a notched IZOD or Charpy test, these methods are performed by securing a molded sample into a fixture and striking it with a pendulum. Used to assess performance capabilities, this method is commonly used by designers, developers and DIYers in the product design process.

A method to evaluate the specific gravity and solid density of polymers. This method is performed by measuring the polymer mass in both air and water, and then multiplying by the temperature corrected density of water. This is a fundamental property that is used to characterize material quality, composition and consistency.
