♻️ New marine debris drop zones in Quatsino Sound!
We have teamed up with The Ocean Legacy Foundation, and the Quatsino First Nation to launch two new drop zones at Grant Bay and Cape Palmerston Recreation Site!
Heading out that way? Help keep the coast clean by adding debris you find to drop zone bags / piles!
The Ocean Legacy Foundation team will empty drop zones periodically, recycling collected debris. Help keep us informed by submitting Site Condition Reports when visiting these sites — a photo of the pile goes a long way!
Remember, drop zones are NOT for camp garbage. Inappropriate use will lead to program termination.

Abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) and aquaculture debris continue to threaten marine ecosystems, wildlife, and coastal economies.
Past investments from the Ghost Gear Fund (GGF) made a real difference by:
-Retrieving and recycling ghost gear
-Restoring habitats like eelgrass beds and salmon corridors
-Creating skilled jobs and training opportunities, especially with --Indigenous and coastal communities
-Building circular systems to manage end-of-life plastics

Whale Rescue Success Story in Vancouver Island Waters!
We are thrilled to see the recent successful rescue of a young humpback whale off the coast of Vancouver Island after it became entangled in marine debris. This incredible three-day effort by responders highlights both the resilience of these majestic animals and the urgent need to address the threat of ocean plastics and ghost gear.
Right in this area, Ocean Legacy Foundation operates an Ocean Plastic Depot, giving local communities a safe, accessible way to recycle fishing gear, ropes, nets, and other plastics before they can harm wildlife.
Every piece of gear collected is one less risk to whales, sea lions, turtles, and countless other species that call these waters home.

Ocean Legacy Foundation and Sæplast Americas Inc announce strategic collaboration under the Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen) Fund!
Ocean Legacy is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with Sæplast Americas Inc., a leading plastic bin manufacturer, as part of the NGen program. This collaboration is focused on advancing innovative and sustainable solutions to the persistent challenge of marine plastic pollution.
Sæplast, operating its Saint John facility, is utilizing recycled resin sourced from end-of-life plastic bins collected on the Westcoast through a partnership with Ocean Legacy, based in British Columbia. Ocean Legacy is responsible for recycling the used containers from Saeplast's customers in British Columbia, and beyond, with loads of totes also arriving from Saeplast’s US based customers. These containers are transformed into pellets and then shipped back to Saeplast’s plant for the production of new plastic totes. This initiative exemplifies a circular economy approach by repurposing materials, reducing waste, and supporting the exploration of scaling the manufacturing of bins with recycled materials while advancing product innovation.
Currently, Saeplast incorporates recycled resin in each bin and is actively conducting tests to increase its loading. The company also plans to develop new intellectual property related to these processes. Additionally, Saeplast is expanding its infrastructure, by acquiring additional pellet storage to accommodate its growing use of PCR. The silos were acquired from a company based in Mississauga ON.
The Saint John plant produces approximately 75,000 plastic bins annually, with costs remaining stable despite the shift to recycled materials.
This collaboration underscores the shared vision of both organizations to transform marine plastic pollution into valuable resources, contributing to a more sustainable future.
We look forward to sharing further updates on this important initiative as it progresses.

Recycling HMPE End-of-Life Marine Rope: How Ocean Legacy and Samson Rope Technologies Are Creating a Circular Future
Ocean Legacy Foundation welcomes Samson Rope as a member of its Marine Plastic Management Program to demonstrate that landfill diversion for previously unrecyclable materials in the marine sector can be achieved.
At Ocean Legacy’s Plastic Pollution Emergency Response Facility in Richmond, BC, retired High Modulus Polyethylene (HMPE) ropes, previously used as vessel mooring and towing lines—are processed using advanced recycling techniques. The fibrous materials are densified into a usable form, then repurposed into functional and durable items.
Initial material processed by Ocean Legacy came from Samson Rope’s Innovation Center in Ferndale, WA. These are end-of-life ropes, recovered and tested to assess residual strength and validate retirement thresholds or performance after unexpected events. The goal is for this initial success to translate into a broader, scaled collection so used ropes can have a second life in new applications.
Without proper recycling or disposal pathways, these materials risk becoming part of the growing plastic pollution problem, with a high probability of ending up in waterways as ghost gear. One concept to address this challenge is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), an approach that holds producers accountable for the full lifecycle of their products, from production to end-of-life management. Although infrastructure challenges exist for an effective EPR system, its proper implementation is both possible and impactful.
Growing New Possibilities
One of the first applications for recycled HMPE is in vertical growing towers that support the growth of different types of plants. These structures stand as proof that with innovation and collaboration, waste can become a useful product.
This partnership exemplifies how cross-industry cooperation can keep complex materials out of landfills and waterways, creating circular solutions and providing a new recycled resource.
