HISTORY & MISSION
Ocean Legacy is a Canadian-based non-profit organization initiated in 2013 with the goal to end the plastic pollution crisis. Ocean Legacy has a proven four-pillar approach called EPIC, which integrates Education, Policy, Infrastructure Development and Clean-up. These pillars are used to co-create innovative solutions which engage the public, media, ENGOs, government agencies, indigenous governance and other businesses globally to achieve plastic-free lands and waters.
OLF has developed the first and largest scale Plastic Pollution Emergency Response Facility in Canada that is focused on finding solutions to recycle marine plastic gear and pollution. The Facility has launched Ocean Legacy as an international leader in plastic pollution reduction, collection and processing, showcasing successful methods in stimulating the plastic circular economy across 7 formal depots which have now diverted over 1.6 million pounds of debris that would have otherwise ended up in landfill or re-entered the natural environment.
The program also provides a prolific online education academy in three languages and growing, as well as works to improve mitigative plastic pollution policy measures with all levels of government. Currently, the program has removed more then 2 million pounds of plastic pollution from over 1000km of coastline, creating over 400 meaningful employment opportunities and has catalyzed long-term tools communities need to steward their natural environment.
Ocean Legacy has performed and led global plastic pollution field operations for over nine years, becoming one of Canada’s most experienced field teams to collect, remove, sort and recycle materials collected from clean-up efforts and currently works with over 100 entities across an international community.
Initiated in 2013, its members have collaborated locally and internationally to clean up shorelines and complete research around British Columbia, CAN, Yelapa, MX, Alaska, USA and across the Pacific Ocean in the North Pacific “Garbage Patch”. Volunteers have now cleaned over 25 kms of rugged Vancouver Island, BC terrain, removing well over 30 metric tons of mixed plastic, foam pollution and Japanese Tsunami Debris. The entire team has been volunteer based, as most funding has been collected through small private donations, out-of-pocket and volunteer labour. The organization is building its capacity, infrastructure and continually growing a professional team.
In 2015, funding was acquired through a Lush Cosmetics grant to purchase a small scale plastic to fuel machine with plans to create one of the world’s first pilot programs which uses plastic to fuel technology in a land based recycling strategy. This initiative will mitigate plastic pollution from reaching fresh water and ocean environments.
In 2016, we joined forces with the Canadian Ministry of Environment to receive some funding via the kind financial gift given by the Government of Japan. This season our operations have expanded immensely and we are currently working with countless communities and passionate volunteers along the West Coast of Vancouver Island including the Checleset and Mowachaht/ Muchalaht First Nations.
We look forward to forging new relationships, collaborations and partnerships, as well as attaining financial sponsorship; which will enable us to continue to expand our operations.
