The Motagua River, coursing through Guatemala, is currently facing an environmental crisis of monumental proportions.
Carrying over 8,500 tonnes of waste each year into the Caribbean Sea, the river has become one of the most polluted in the world. This extensive pollution not only poses a threat to the river itself but also jeopardizes the health of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second most important reef on the planet.
Join us in this transformative journey to reclaim the Motagua River in Guatemala!
Ocean Legacy Foundation (OLF) and Haciendo ECO have united forces with 45+ organizations in the Motagua River Alliance, aiming to restore the river basin and combat plastic pollution.
This funding will support the implementation of the following key Initiatives:
Engaging 45 schools and businesses in 15 municipalities, EPIC Academy educates on ocean plastics, waste management, and environmental conservation.
Shoreline Cleanups:
Aiming to recover the Motagua River Basin, extensive cleanups will be conducted across 15 municipalities, combating the river’s annual discharge of 8,500 tonnes of waste into the Caribbean Sea.
Strategic Education: Implementing educational signage and programs like ECOreto 21 and EPIC Academy to bridge knowledge gaps in environmental education.
