enerkem-alberta-biofuels-lr-1Enerkem, a world-leading waste-to-biofuels and chemicals producer, and The Ocean Legacy Foundation, a Canadian non-profit organization which conducts recurring cleanup expeditions to recuperate soiled plastics from oceans, have engaged discussions to take action on ocean plastic waste, driftage and marine litter, while explore ways to transform these unrecoverable plastics to produce value-added, low carbon transportation fuels and chemicals.

Tackling our oceans of global marine litter and plastic pollution was one of the major outcomes highlighted during the G7 Leaders’ Summit, held last June in Charlevoix, Quebec. During the Summit, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and the European Union have agreed to the Oceans Plastics Charter, a positive step for the environment and for businesses that will benefit from reducing the cost associated with plastic use. Enerkem as well as The Ocean Legacy Foundation are endorsing this initiative which aims at ensuring plastics are designed for reuse and recycling, as well as protecting the environment and keeping valuable plastics in the economy.

Enerkem produces advanced biofuels and renewable chemicals from waste. Its disruptive proprietary technology converts non-recyclable, non-compostable municipal solid waste into methanol, ethanol and other widely-used chemicals. Headquartered in Montreal (QC), Canada, Enerkem operates a full-scale commercial facility in Alberta as well as an innovation centre in Quebec. Enerkem’s facilities are built as prefabricated systems based on the company’s modular manufacturing infrastructure that can be deployed globally. Enerkem’s technology is a prime example of how a true circular economy can be achieved by diversifying the energy mix and by making everyday products greener while offering a smart, sustainable alternative to landfilling and incineration.

The Ocean Legacy FoundationThe Ocean Legacy Foundation is an international non-profit organization which utilizes spatial mapping, education and research, clean-up expeditions and plastic to fuel technologies to develop the world leading MARINE DEBRIS SOLUTIONS™ program. This dynamic and integrative approach combines sustainable technologies with education and skills training to give all plastic wastes and debris economic value and communities the long-term tools they need to steward their environment.
